What Is Neti Kriya?

Neti Kriya is a cleansing practice from the ancient Indian system of yoga that involves nasal irrigation. It is part of the Shatkarma or Shatkriya practices, which are a set of purification techniques designed to cleanse the body and mind according to yogic philosophy.

Neti Kriya specifically involves using a neti pot, which is a small container with a spout, filled with warm saline water, to rinse the nasal passages. The practitioner tilts their head to one side, allowing the water to flow through one nostril and out the other, clearing the nasal passages of mucus, debris, and other impurities. Then, the process is repeated on the other side.

Neti Kriya is believed to have numerous benefits, including improving nasal and sinus health, reducing allergies, relieving nasal congestion, enhancing breathing capacity, improving sense of smell, and promoting mental clarity. It is also believed to help balance the energy channels in the body, according to the yogic concept of nadis.

Types of Neti Kriya

Neti kriya is a cleansing technique or practice that involves cleansing the nasal passages. It is one of the six purification techniques, known as shatkarma, in traditional Hatha Yoga. There are two main types of neti kriya:

  • Jala Neti: Jala neti involves using lukewarm saline water to cleanse the nasal passages. A neti pot, which is a small vessel with a spout, is filled with the saline water, and the water is poured through one nostril while the head is tilted to the side, allowing the water to flow out through the other nostril. This process helps to flush out impurities, allergens, and excess mucus from the nasal passages, promoting clear breathing and relieving nasal congestion.
  • Sutra Neti: Sutra neti involves using a thin rubber catheter or a specially designed waxed string to cleanse the nasal passages. The catheter or string is gently inserted through one nostril and then pulled out through the mouth, allowing it to pass through the nasal passages and remove any accumulated debris or mucus. Sutra neti is considered a more advanced practice and requires proper guidance and instruction from a qualified teacher.

Both jala neti and sutra neti are considered effective practices for maintaining nasal hygiene, improving respiratory health, and promoting overall well-being. However, it is important to practice neti kriya under the guidance of an experienced teacher and with proper hygiene practices to avoid any potential risks or complications.
